CAPTAIN & VESSEL FOR HIRE

LOBSTER & ROCK CRAB PREDATION STUDY

FOR OCTOBER 2019

Deadline to submit your interest is 4:30PM, Monday, September 30th, 2019.

Funding was recently secured to pursue an important project focused on the diet of lobster and in particular it’s dependency on rock crab.

The DFO Science team in collaboration with the PEI Fishermen’s Association will be seeking the services of a PEI Captain & support vessel to provide assistance to the team while sampling in the Alberton area.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND DETAILS OF THE PROJECT:

  • The project will vary between the dates of October 1st to 25th, 2019. The expected timeframe for the Captain & supporting vessel for Alberton area sampling will be up to 4 days ideally during the same calendar week (weather dependant and as decided by the Science team).  It is anticipated that a typical work day will begin at 6am and end before 1pm, however flexibility may be required.
  •  While DFO-Sciences will be performing scuba activities from their own boat, a supporting vessel, Captain and 1 crew member would be close by to bring samples (of lobster and rock crab) onboard for storage and for some samples; immediate freezing.  Lobsters and crabs will need to be measured and sex and carapace condition will be assessed and recorded according to set protocol.  The project will follow the guidelines of the DFO science permit.
  • A chest freezer and a marine-grade inverter will be supplied by DFO but space and adequate power supply will be needed on the supporting vessel.
  •  The support vessel may carry some DFO, PEIFA and or PEI Fisheries and Communities staff.
  • The supporting vessel will bring the samples to shore, close to Alberton, for offloading and pass on the recorded information.
  • The Captain & supporting vessel must meet the standard Transport Canada and fishing safety requirements.
  • Payment is approx. $124.00 per hour (for approximately 6 hours per day) for up to 4 days.
  • The Captain agrees that he shall maintain third party liability insurance on his vessel (in the amount of $1,000,000.00 per occurrence on his vessel). A copy of the insurance plan will need to be provided.
  • The Captain will be required to sign a contract with the PEIFA (copy of the contract can be provided for their info) agreeing to the protocol, rate of pay and insurance
  • A T4A will be issued upon completion of the project thus the PEIFA will require the Captain’s Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Interested Captains are asked to contact the PEIFA to register.  Registration is free.  Any questions on the project, please contact Melanie Giffin commpeifa@eastlink.ca or 902-566-4050.

Deadline to submit your interest is 4:30PM, Monday, September 30th, 2019.  A draw of qualified Captains will take place following the deadline.
