The Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association (PEIFA) is currently seeking applicants for the position of Field Technician. 

Position summary

The Field Technician will support research activities coordinated by the PEIFA. The Field Technician must be comfortable working on vessels, in a laboratory, and in an office setting. The candidate needs to be comfortable working on a commercial fishing vessel for full days in various weather conditions and be willing to travel and drive long distances to remote areas.

Location:

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (the position will be based at the offices of the PEI Fishermen’s Association)

Pay: $20-22

Job type:

Full-time (37.5 hours/week) from May 4th to December 31st

Hours may vary based on fieldwork

Primary Responsibilities

·      Participating in at-sea or wharf sampling

·      Recording scientific data

·      Sample processing

·      Travelling to collect or deliver project samples (travel costs paid for by PEIFA)

·      Entering data into an electronic spreadsheet or database

·      Research and review topics related to the fishing industry

·      Provide administrative support to project leads

·      Basic data analysis and drafting of project results for communication with members

·      Other tasks or duties assigned by the PEIFA project leads.

Required education and skills

·      Class 5 drivers license and reliable access to a vehicle

·      Strong written and verbal communication skills

·      Ability to work in a team and independently

·      Competent in Microsoft Office

·      Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks efficiently.

·      Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with evolving project needs.

·      Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to challenges.

·      Comfortable working on a fishing vessel or at a wharf, including lifting and moving equipment as needed.

Preferred education and skills

·      BSc Biology or degree in a related field

·      Education or experience with a marine focus
