The Fish Harvester Benefit offers income support to self-employed fish harvesters and sharepersons. The benefit covers up to 75% of income losses beyond a 25% threshold for the 2020 tax year when compared to 2018 or 2019. The maximum benefit is $10,164.
Individuals applying for the Fish Harvester Benefit will need to ensure that they have the following information available:
Social Insurance Number (SIN)
Amount of their reported self-employed fishing income for the 2018 or 2019 tax year
(whichever is higher)
Income Tax Program Account Number if income is reported under a corporation
Projected estimate of the applicant’s self-employed fishing income for 2020
Applicant’s full home address
Bank details for payments (including branch transit number, institution number and
* Individuals applying for the Fish Harvester Grant will need to have the information listed above as well as their Unique Identifier or Fisher Identification Number (FIN) and their estimated fishing expenses for 2020.
Unique identifiers will be distributed to Indigenous communities by Business Development Teams (BDT) or the DFO in advance to the program opening. For freshwater fisheries, the Province or Territory will issue unique identifiers where required.

Fish Harvester Benefit and Grant Program
The Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, the Honourable Bernadette Jordan, has announced that the Fish Harvester Benefit and Grant Program will open for applications on August 24, 2020, through to September 21, 2020.
The Fish Harvester Grant is a non-repayable grant to self-employed fish harvesters with a valid
commercial fishing licence in 2020 (issued by DFO or their Province or Territory for freshwater
commercial harvesters), and who had reported landings and self-employed fishing income in 2018 or 2019.The grant program provides non-repayable support of 10% of reported self- employed fishing income in 2018 or 2019 up to a maximum of $10,000. A lesser grant amount may be provided on a sliding scale relative to revenue or actual expenses.
