What is the Fisher Assistance Program?  The Fisher Assistance Program (FAP) is a service that provides confidential, professional counselling services to fishers and their families.  The program recognizes that some problems can affect home life and work performance.  When this happens, help may be required in resolving these problems through the assistance of a trained professional counsellor.  These counsellors are trained to provided short-term counselling or refer you to other professional services and resources in the community.  

Who qualifies?  All PEIFA members that hold independent core licenses, their families and crew members. 

What kind of problems does the FAP help resolve?  The FAP helps you deal with a wide range of problems that affect your personal well being and work performance.  These problems may include work or family pressures, job stress, alcohol or drug dependency, marital problems, children's issues or other conflicts.  The FAP counsellors have a wide range of experience in a variety of problem areas including:  

  • stress and anxiety
  • alcohol and drug misuse
  • bereavement
  • couple and marital issues
  • depression
  • elder care concerns
  • family matters/parenting concerns
  • counselling with children and teens
  • legal matters
  • financial concerns
  • learning disabilities 
  • grief counselling 
  • career counselling
  • anger management

Is this service confidential?  YES, your privacy is protected by strict confidentiality laws and regulations and by professional ethical standards for counsellors.  The details of your discussiosn iwth counsellors will not be released to anyone, including the PEIFA executive, without your written consent, other than the exceptions listed below. *

*Certain exceptions apply when information must be provided to others, whether or not consent is given such as when a person appears to pose a threat of serious injury to themselves or others.  Counsellors are also legally required to report suspicion of child abuse and to disclose information required by law. 

How do I contact a FAP counsellor?  Please call (902) 626-9787 where you can get in touch with a counsellor or feel free to contact the counsellor directly at the numbers listed below.  FAP counselling hours are flexible, therefore appointments will be made at the earliest convenience.  We also offer bilingual counselling services.  

Are there any costs for the FAP services?  100% coverage to PEIFA members and their immediate family.

Personnel Update – PEIFA Fisher Assistance Program 

The Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association would like to thank Jan Henry for her dedication and work with the PEI fishing community. She had been with the Fisher Assistance Program since its inception and was one of its founders. We wish Jan and her family well in their new life in the Province of Alberta. 

The PEIFA Fisher Assistance Program wishes to introduce Wendy Holm to our Association Members. Wendy grew up in West Prince and graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with her masters in social work in 2007and since then has worked in Ontario and with the PEI Government for the past eleven years. 

Wendy resides in Summerside with her husband and their young child. Wendy has conveniently assumed Jan Henry’s office space for her private practice at 293 Water St, Summerside. She may be contacted at 902-786-4656 or at the regular Support Program number at 902-894-8006.
