On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation for your support of the PEIFA.
The following are some recent and upcoming activities that we would like to update our fishing community on.

The office staff has provided:

1) Administrative support for the Tuna, Herring, Lobster and other Advisory Boards
2) Assisting in the set up of numerous LFA Rationalization meetings and mail outs
3) Acoustic Herring and Lobster Collector projects and the Tuna Tagging project

The Tuna Tagging project was an extensive research project, focusing on the mortality rates for catch and release tuna. These studies help us better understand this fishery and what opportunities may be available in the future for Island Fishers.

Other PEIFA projects in progress or planned for 2011 include:
1) Development of a new name for the “canner” lobster
2) Participating in a new and existing festivals to promote Island lobster
3) An improved communication strategy with our members
4) Development of a promotional DVD on our fishing industry
5) Launch of a membership health and dental benefits program
6) Pilot Project to send live “canner” lobsters to China
7) Meeting on a regular basis with both the Provincial and Federal governments on fishing related     matters such as the Low Interest Loan Program
8) Continued advocacy for higher species prices

A dedicated group of PEIFA volunteer Board members work to the best of their ability to improve our fishery.
