To whom it may concern,

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) would like to inform you that the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard will be providing advice to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change on whether or not to add American Eel to the List of Wildlife Species at Risk (Schedule 1) of the Species at Risk Act (SARA).

DFO previously consulted and engaged with Indigenous peoples, stakeholders and other interested parties on the potential addition of American Eel to Schedule 1 of SARA between November 2015 and March 2016. Species information and the consultation documents used to support this process at the time can be found here: American Eel (Anguilla rostrata) – Species search – Species at risk registry (canada.ca). Based on the results of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) assessments, scientific advice, socio-economic analysis, and the feedback received during the initial consultation period, the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard is developing advice to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change on whether or not to add this species to Schedule 1 of SARA.

To ensure the Minister’s advice is informed by current opinions, we are checking in with interested parties. If you would like to confirm or update previous positions, or offer additional information, we invite you to visit the Species at Risk Public Registry https://species-registry.canada.ca/index-en.html#/consultations/1049 for further details.
