Conservation Harvesting Plan 16 F Commercial Fall Herring Fishery – 2024 


 Quota: 

1,291 t (1,054 t initial + 237 t from reserve) 

Season Opening: 

Sunday, September 15,2024 at 18:00 hours to Friday, October 11, 2024 at 12:00 hours 

Daily Closures: 

12:00 hours to 18:00 hours 

Weekend Closures: 

- 12:00 hrs Friday, September 20 to 18:00 hrs Sunday, September 22 

- 12:00 hrs Friday, September 27 to 18:00 hrs Sunday, September 29 

- 12:00 hrs Friday, October 4 to 18:00 hrs Sunday, October 6 

Trip Limit: 

There will be no trip limit (kg) on the Conditions of Licence in accordance with the Overage project. Fish harvesters have agreed to limit their landings to 6,804 kg. Fish harvesters will not directly benefit from any amount in excess of this limit per trip as the funds will go to the Gulf Nova Scotia Herring Federation to conduct programs for the betterment of the fishery.

Net (size/mesh deep/ length): 

66.7 mm min / 125 mesh / 100 fathoms. A maximum of two (2) sets of nets is permitted to be used in the fishery A maximum of 100 fathoms of nets are permitted to be fished with or on board the vessel. 

Fishing Restrictions: 

While fishing in the portion of Herring Fishing Area (HFA) 16F between HFA 16E and a rhumb line drawn between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia following the longitude 62⁰ 29′ 00″ W (NAD 83), no herring fishing nets are permitted to be fished or set in waters greater than 15.24 meters (50ft) in depth, regardless of tidal differences. 

Catch Limitations: 

From September 15, 2024 until such time the fishery is closed, no nets or fishing gear shall be set or left in the water from 12:00 noon until 18:00 hrs per day or during any weekend closures. Herring shall be off-loaded only once per 18 hour opening from 18:00 until 12:00 the following day. 

Vessels: 

Vessels to be used in this fishery must be from the same administrative area
