PLANNING FOR THE 2012 PEI TUNA FISHERY
A mailout to all PEI tuna fishing license holders has begun to continue the management planning for the 2012 Tuna fishery. The mailout includes a pre-amble of management planning to-date and a questionaire to be completed by tuna fish harvesters and submitted to the PEIFA. Fish harvesters should start to see letters in their mailboxes as early as today.
Deadline for submitting is May 29th, 2012.
The PEI Fishermen’s Association’s Tuna Advisory Board held two Island-wide tuna input meetings in Alberton and Cornwall on March 6th & 7th, 2012. Based on the suggestions and feedback from those meetings, the Tuna Advisory initiated planning for the 2012 tuna management plan.
As promised the Advisory is sending out this mailout and questionnaire to collect further information from fish harvesters and finalize the 2012 plan. It should also be noted that the Advisory are currently awaiting the announcement from the Minister of Fisheries & Oceans on PEI’s Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for 2012.
The Tuna Advisory Board will meet again once the results of the questionnaires are calculated and will finalize the PEIFA approach to the 2012 management plan based on those results. Please note that individual survey results will be kept confidential.
For further information, please contact your local Tuna Advisory representative or the PEIFA at 566-4050. Completed questionnaires can be sent by mail to:
