MICHAEL MCGEOGHEGAN, PRESIDENT OF THE PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND FISHERMEN’S ASSOCIATION, AS A RESULT OF A PEIFA TUNA ADVISORY BOARD MEETING HELD THURSDAY, 13TH OCTOBER 2011 ANNOUNCED THE DETAILS OF THE RECENT TUNA DRAW HELD BY THE PEIFA ON FRIDAY, 07 OCTOBER 2011,. DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES AND OCEANS STATISTICS SHOW THAT 20.492 METRIC TONNES OF TUNA REMAINED IN THE WATER AT THE COMPLETION OF THE FIRST ALLOCATION OF THE PEI TUNA SEASON ON WEDNESDAY, 12 OCTOBER 2011. THE TUNA FISHERS WHO ARE ELIGIBLE TO FISH THE UNUSED PORTION OF THE ALLOCATION ARE ANXIOUSLY WAITING TO PICK UP THEIR TAGS FROM DFO, HOPEFULLY, BY FRIDAY, 14TH OCTOBER 2011.

CURRENTLY, WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXCELLENT AND TUNA ARE PLENTIFUL, BOTH AT NORTH LAKE AND TIGNISH LOCATIONS. FISHERS ARE ANXIOUS TO GET ON THE WATER AND CATCH THE TUNA, BEFORE WEATHER CONDITIONS DETERIORATE AND TUNA DISAPPEAR FROM THE REGION. THE ECONOMIC VALUE OF THE TUNA REMAINING TO BE CAUGHT IS ESTIMATED TO BE BETWEEN $400,000 - $600,000.
