TRADITIONAL FISHERIES KNOWLEDGE MAPPING

~UPDATE~  June 9th, 2009

The PEIFA participated in the 2009 Traditional Fisheries Knowledge Mapping update project through the Coalition for Sustainability which focused on areas of the Northumberland Strait.  Fishermen shared knowledge on spawning grounds, important habitat, species information, fishing areas, etc.  Fishers from NS and NB also participated in the project.  This initiative derives from a similar mapping project pursued in the 1990s which encompassed most of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence

A big THANK YOU to all those fish harvesters who volunteered their time towards this project.

The following link is the Coalition’s quarterly newsletter previewing the project:

We will be adding the direct link to the mapping website as soon as it’s made available.  Also, a color copy of the maps is now available at the PEIFA office.  For more information on this project, please contact Laura Ramsay 566-4050.
