Notice to PEI Herring Fish Harvesters
HFA 16 C&E and 16G Southside

ACOUSTIC SOUNDING & VARIABLE MESH GILLNET PROJECT

PEIFA & DFO Science Branch are seeking two reliable and experienced fish harvesters to assist in the annual herring survey. One participant for the Herring fishing area (HFA) 16C&E and one in HFA 16G Southside.

Qualifications include (but not limited to):
• Must be committed to fishing throughout the season and possibly available for the survey before and after the fishing season. If successful in accurately completing this year’s survey could be expected to carry on the survey for the next 5 fishing seasons (pending funding availability).
• Must agree to fish a variable mesh test net at least once a week as well as separating catch in appropriate containers.
• Must be willing to install a DFO transducer in the hull of the boat prior to installation of logging system and be able to run cable to location where scientific equipment will be housed.
• Fishing vessel must be in good condition, with 12 volt electrical system and batteries, and must allow hook-up of scientific electrical equipment and GPS navigation system. Vessel must not have or use a generator on board during fishing activities as it interferes with equipment.
• Sounder used by the Captain must be a different frequency than 120 KHz
• Captain must fill out two logbooks (one for test net and one daily log of fishing activities) and will be responsible to download acoustic data regularly from computer on board to internet source for transfer of info to DFO ftp site.

Qualified Captains are asked to submit their name and info to the PEI Fishermen’s Association no later than August 15th, 2011. Selection of qualified participants will take place via a draw after submission deadline. Compensation to participants for 2011 is $400 per test net haul to a maximum of $3000 per season including set up and dismantle of equipment (subject to change pending funding availability).
