The Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association strongly advocates that an Atlantic Market Intelligence exchange be set up immediately so that current, accurate and relevant industry information can be accessed.
Although information exchanges have taken place between the harvesting and processing sector before the start of the Spring lobster season, discrepancies in catches and catch volumes are starting to surface.
The set up of an independent industry information source was one of the primary recommendations of the Maritime Lobster Panel Report.
The PEIFA recommends that interim funding be provided by Atlantic Provinces on a cost shared basis. Although the Maritime Panel report recommended long term funding is part of an industry levy that is currently under review by the various provinces, the two items can be set up separately.
“This is an important part of fixing this industry and should be implemented immediately states PEIFA President Mike McGeoghegan. We need to “end the mystery in this industry and assist all sectors in becoming profitable”
Cold water and continuing low seasonal temperatures continue to result in low catches in many fishing areas.
The PEIFA would like to access a system that provides weekly information updates to harvesters so that timely and sound business decisions can be made during the lobster season.
