Prince Edward Island Fishermen's Association

News Release - Wednesday January 23, 2013

For Immediate Release:

The Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association continues to closely monitor the situation regarding the recent changes to the federal Employment Insurance program.

These concerns revolve around the ability of crew members, fish plant workers and other people associated with the fishery to find off season jobs and remain on Prince Edward Island.

A federal initiative that extended benefit eligibility by 5 weeks ended earlier this year. This change may create hardship for those employed in the spring fishery. The impact to local families and economies will be significant.

The goal remains for seasonal workers to find local employment during the off- season, however this is not always possible given the seasonality of the PEI economy.

The PEIFA will be attending upcoming sessions on Prince Edward Island later this month where concerns of other Islanders regarding the changes in Employment Insurance will be heard and discussed.
