The PEI Fishermen’s Association met in Charlottetown with Premier Robert Ghiz on May 13th, 2013 to discuss the serious issues surrounding lobster prices on PEI. The following commitments were noted from the meeting:
• Agreement on an Independent Review/audit of lobster pricing in Atlantic Canada. The PEIFA will be involved in developing the terms of reference for the analysis in the very near future.
• The Province has committed to an interest freeze for the current low interest loan program. The Province will consider new applicants to the program
• Commitment to work more cooperatively with Provincial counterparts in NS, NB, Quebec and NFLD on matters of mutual benefit. An example could include discussions on a price setting model for Atlantic Canada.
• The PEIFA also left a document with Premier Ghiz for review on topics such as a functional industry panel (group), and a revisit of the status of the seafood marketing agency.
