The Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association (PEIFA) continues to be immersed in the issues surrounding the upcoming Spring fishing season.

Numerous reports on social media continue to speculate on when the seasons will start and if there will be a Spring lobster season.

The PEIFA continues to collect daily information as the situation changes but no decisions have been made.

The association understands our members need to know if gear should be put on the wharf and if additional plans concerning crews, bait and other preparations should be made.

Our members have clearly told us the key issues are:

1)   Health of the captains and crew

2)   Shore price

3)   What type of restrictions will be in place for catches?

4)   What are the contingency plans should a plant be closed for weeks or the season should an employee be affected by COVID-19?

The PEIFA is working hard on drafting support program requests that will be presented to Provincial and Federal governments should the season take place, be delayed or cancelled entirely.

The PEIFA Board of Directors and LFA Lobster Advisories are being advised of current situations and options as information changes.

Board and Advisory conference calls are regularly taking place.

In summary, no decisions have been made concerning the Spring Lobster season.

The PEIFA membership will be consulted and members will be informed accordingly moving forward.
