The PEIFA is seeking up to 30 Volunteer Captains for one day each for the 2023 PEI LFA 25 Post-Season Gear Retrieval Program. A per-diem of 1200 dollars will be offered to assist with compensation of basic costs such as crew and fuel. The per-diem will be available to all registered and approved captains who participate for a minimum of 6 hours in their respective zones. The volunteer gear retrieval portion of the project is a continuation of the efforts of the PCFA Board in collaboration with the PEIFA which began in 2020.
Volunteer Captains can proceed from their own harbours and travel to their own fishing grounds or areas nearby that need gear surveying and retrieval in LFA 25. Participants will use their own personal grappling equipment for the purpose of locating lost fishing gear. To participate in the program captain’s must hold a Fall Lobster License in LFA 25 on PEI. Captains will be provided with a section 52 permit, which will allow gear to be taken on board and moved to designated wharves and secure storage. Gear retrieval will take place on the best weather day between October 16th to October 21st, 2023. Retrieval efforts will aim to be divided with one day of volunteers proceeding with the southern portion of LFA 25 and one day in the northern portion (based on homeport). Captains will need to sign a waiver with the PEIFA. Captains will be required to complete and submit a basic log sheet of info on all gear retrieved.
