PEI Fishermen’s Association Spring Season update – Covid 19

April 3rd, 2020

The PEIFA understands that many members are seeking direction on the 2020 Spring lobster season.

The most frequently asked questions are:

1)   Will the season start as planned?

2)   Will it be delayed?

3)   Will the season be cancelled?

Many conference calls with industry and Federal and Provincial governments have taken place over the past week.

The health and the safety of our Captains, crews and wharf personnel have been identified as the main concerns of our members. Financial viability is also key.

DFO has made it clear that the season will proceed as scheduled unless they get direction from the harvesters.

The PEIFA is waiting for COVID 19 bio security protocols as to what would be required on the wharfs and in the boats if the season proceeds. These protocols are being drafted by the Province of Prince Edward Island. We are anticipating that this information will be received early next week.

Once the information is received, we will be seeking the input of the membership through online and phone surveys so that all members can provide direction on the season. A prompt response will be required so we can chart our next steps.

We intend to prepare an online survey to gather timely feedback from members.

We encourage members to contact the PEIFA office at (902) 566-4050 EXT 1  with their email and contact info, if they have not already done so, or if they need an alternative option of contact.

The PEIFA will continue to provide updates when we have additional confirmation and accurate information to communicate to our members.
